Is Your Fireplace Ready for Winter? A Pre-Season Checklist for NJ Homeowners

November in Northern New Jersey means one thing: it’s fireplace season. The leaves are down, the temperatures are dropping, and Bergen County homeowners are heading to the thermostat — and, if they’re lucky, the hearth. But before you strike that first match or flip that ignition switch, there’s a critical question worth asking: is your fireplace actually ready?

A fireplace that’s been sitting dormant since March can develop problems you won’t notice until you’re already cold. Dust accumulation, animal nests, gas line wear, and cracked components are all common issues that go undetected until the first fire of the season — sometimes with dangerous results. At KJB Fireplaces, we’ve spent over 20 years helping Northern NJ homeowners get their hearths ready for winter safely and confidently. Here’s the checklist we recommend every year.

1. Schedule a Professional Inspection First

Before anything else, have your fireplace inspected by a certified professional. This is especially important if you haven’t used it in more than six months, recently purchased your home, or if it’s been more than a year since your last inspection. In New Jersey, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends annual inspections for all fireplace types.

A professional inspection will check for:

  • Cracks or damage to the firebox, flue, or chimney liner
  • Gas line integrity and connection points (for gas fireplaces)
  • Proper draft and ventilation function
  • Carbon monoxide or gas leak risks
  • Obstruction from animal nests, debris, or creosote buildup

Pro tip from KJB: Many NJ homeowners skip the inspection until something goes wrong. Don’t wait — the cost of a pre-season inspection is a fraction of what emergency repairs can run, especially heading into the busy winter months.

2. Test Your Gas Fireplace Ignition System

If you have a gas fireplace — which is the most popular type we install throughout Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties — your first test should be the ignition system. Turn the fireplace on and observe the following:

  • Does it ignite on the first or second try? Repeated failed ignitions can signal a faulty igniter or thermocouple.
  • Is the flame consistent and blue? Orange or yellow flames can indicate a gas mixture issue.
  • Does the flame respond correctly to the thermostat or remote control?
  • Is there any unusual smell, noise, or soot buildup around the firebox opening?

If you notice any of these warning signs, shut the unit off and call a professional before using it. Gas issues are not DIY territory — in New Jersey, gas appliance work must be performed by licensed professionals.

3. Clean the Glass and Firebox

After months of sitting idle, your fireplace glass and interior firebox will likely have a layer of dust, residue, or oxidation. For gas fireplaces, use a non-abrasive glass cleaner specifically designed for fireplace glass — standard household cleaners can damage the ceramic glass used in most gas units. For wood-burning fireplaces, remove ash and debris from the firebox with a metal ash bucket, never a regular vacuum.

Clean the log set or fire glass if your gas fireplace uses them. Dust-covered artificial logs can occasionally produce off-putting odors during the first few burns of the season — a light cleaning before you start can prevent this.

4. Check Your Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

This step isn’t technically about your fireplace — but it’s non-negotiable. New Jersey law requires working carbon monoxide detectors in all homes, and every NJ homeowner with a fireplace or gas appliance should ensure their detectors are functional before the heating season begins. Test every unit. Replace batteries. If any detector is more than 7 years old, replace it entirely.

According to the NJ Department of Health, carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of accidental poisoning deaths in the U.S. A $30 detector could save your family’s life.

5. Inspect the Area Around Your Fireplace

Take a look at the physical space surrounding your hearth. Over the summer, furniture may have migrated closer, decorations may have accumulated on the mantel, and rugs may have crept toward the firebox. The National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping all flammable materials at least three feet from any operating fireplace.

  • Move furniture to maintain a safe clearance zone
  • Remove any flammable decorations from the mantel
  • Check that your hearth rug or pad is fire-resistant
  • Ensure your fireplace screen or glass doors are in good working condition

6. Consider a Pre-Season Tune-Up

Even if your fireplace passes all of the above checks, an annual tune-up from a qualified hearth professional can catch the kinds of wear and degradation that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. At KJB Fireplaces, our service and support team performs comprehensive tune-ups for homeowners throughout Bergen County and beyond — cleaning components, testing gas pressure, lubricating moving parts, and ensuring everything is operating at peak efficiency heading into the coldest months.

What If Your Fireplace Needs More Than Maintenance?

Sometimes a pre-season check reveals something bigger: an outdated unit, a cracked firebox, or a wood-burning fireplace that’s overdue for conversion to gas. If your fireplace inspection turns up significant issues, it may be more cost-effective to reface or replace the unit than to repair it — especially if the unit is more than 15 to 20 years old.

This is exactly the kind of conversation our team is built for. We’ve helped thousands of Northern NJ homeowners evaluate their options honestly and without pressure. Whether your fireplace needs a $150 tune-up or a complete replacement, we’ll give you a straight answer.
